Abstract

Nearly one-third of people working in the developed world hold non-traditional roles that are largely ignored by social policy makers and social scientists alike. They work as independent contractors, freelancers, temporary employees, service providers, and other “free agent” work styles. They prize independence over company allegiance, and would rather build a transferable portfolio of skills than climb a corporate ladder. Many find work on their own, develop their own skills, and work on virtual teams -- never meeting with HR, lunching with colleagues, or setting foot on property owned by the corporations they enable. They are a vast and growing segment of the current labor force, and they are reshaping the very definition of work itself. They also present a clear challenge to the status quo in government, corporations, academia, and beyond. If we want to empower the success of future organizations and workforces, we must be willing to move beyond the pervasive, outdated model of “jobs” and delve into the new, far more flexible reality of modern work.
